Roll Cooling Systems / selective cooling
Roll cooling system

Roll cooling and roll-gap lubrication systems from Evertz Hydrotechnik are used in the following plants:

  • Hot- and cold-rolling steel mills
  • Hot- and cold-rolling aluminum mills
  • Foil rolling mills
  • Rolling mills for non-ferrous metals

Tailoring solutions to your specific needs and specifications, we design and manufacture complete systems comprising spray valves with integrated spray nozzles, spray bars and control cabinets, including commonly used bus interfacings.

In the field of hot- and cold-rolling mills, the multi-zone cooling system shown above in simplified form is employed in the production of steel, aluminium and non-ferrous metal sheets and plates. For this purpose 2/2 directional spray valves in pitches of 13, 26 or 52 mm are arranged over the entire width of the roll to apply cooling media in a well-aimed manner to certain roll zones so that the sheet thickness can be controlled to the closest possible tolerance.

This process necessitates reliable, quick-acting spray valves of the kind developed, manufactured and sold by Evertz Hydrotechnik to satisfy the customer's specific needs.

As can be seen from the above schematic diagram, the cooling medium is collected below the roll stand, cleaned in a filtering plant and fed via a pumping station to a spray bar fitted with spray vavles. The spray valves are controlled by 3/2 directional solenoid valves, which are usually located outside the roll stand. However, if the customer desires they can be mounted directly at the spray bar within the roll stand. Control Cabintets

The valves can be piloted by means of system-integrated or external media. In the example shown here, an external medium (e.g. compressed air) is used for piloting. This is a design variant that is particularly recommended if a contamination of the main fluid is expected. Nevertheless, if carefully filtered the available cooling agent or, for example, fully demineralized water, can also be used for piloting.

Spray Valves
  • 1:1 valves DN5, DN8, DN12 and DN16
  • Diaphragm spray valves DN12 and DN16
  • 2:1 valves DN8, DN12 and DN16
  • Directly controlled valves ("pilot valves mounted on spray bar")
  • Motor-operated valves (proportional valves)

Spray valves from Evertz Hydrotechnik are supplied in sizes DN5, DN8, DN12 and DN16*. The maximum flow rate is 120 l/min.* Because the valves are made of stainless steel and high-grade sealing systems are used, our products feature a long service life and high availability. All design variants are manufactured with the goal of providing optimal flow configurations for the lowest possible pressure loss. Contrary to many other manufacturers of spray systems, Evertz Hydrotechnik always strives to supply to the individual customer valve solutions that meet the given requirements perfectly. Special valves for almost any application in the field of roll cooling have been created throughout many years of close cooperation with our customers.

Spray bars

The spray bars made by Evertz Hydrotechnik are designed to meet the specific needs of our customers. Accordingly, our bar designs are tailored to the respective locations, available space and the spray media to be used. To suit the relevant application, standard profiles or solid bars are provided that are made of carbon or stainless steel, as necessitated by the spray medium.

Control Cabinets

When actuated with compressed air and with the pilot valves arranged outside the roll stand, the valves are mounted in suitable control cabinets. The control signals to the cabinet are transmitted by the main computer, and in most cases the interface is a standardized bus system (profi-bus).

The control air is fed to the spray bar in the roll stand via multiple control lines run in protective, stainless-steel hoses. If desired by the customer, the multiple control lines can be supplied with or without multiple couplings.

With direct control the pilot valves are directly integrated in the spray bar and the rolling stand.

The interface is usually a standardized bus system (profi-bus).

The power supply is provided by electrical multi-pin plugs, protected by a special plastic sheath or corrugated stainless-steel hose.
