Scarfing of slabs

The Evertz Group has installed a new flame scarfing plant for the Bremen Steelworks ("Stahlwerke Bremen") for processing both sides of slabs and which has been in operation since August 1, 1997.

The plant uses a new technology which transmits the movements applied to a joystick control to the boom, at the end of which is a new type of flame lance. This means that the surfaces of the slab are not all simultaneously scarfed, but one after the other, resulting in savings in material. The scarfing action can be performed selectively or the whole process programmed to operate in different stages.

The machine is mounted in a dust-extraction hall 18m x 18m, between two 45m tracks, on which the slabs at up to 400 °C are fed to the machine. The slabs are loaded onto the slab tracks using a magnetic crane. Slab sizes are up to 2200 mm wide and 12,500 m long. The maximum weight is 45 t.
