Columbus installs slab grinding machines

Already in 1997 the privately owned joint venture company Columbus is to produce 390000 t stainless flat products at its Middelburg works.

The main components of the works include an electric steelmaking plant with a singlestrand slab easter supplied by VAI1) and a steckeI mill installed by Kvaerner Davy 2). In December 1996 Egon Evertz KG 3) installed two slab grinding machines between these production areas. The grinding machines eliminate impuritiess and holes in the slab surface. The machines can handle between 500 and 1000 t/day of slabs. They are designed as mobile semiautomatic units, allowing them to be easily moved and used without problem for other purposes, i.e. moulds, blooms or rounds. The equipment has been provided on a leasing basis. The slabs to be processed are typically 1600 mm wide, 200 mm thick and 10.5 m long. The complete dimension range lies between 800 mm and 1600 mm wide, 150 mrn and 250 mm thick with a maximum length of 15 m. Up to 15 t of machining swarf has to be disposed of every day. The related downtimes are between 0.5 and 2%.
