Grinding of Slabs

Located on one of the "ArcelorMittal" steelworks Evertz has two locations where we undertake for several customers alloy-specific quality and repair grinding on ingot and continuous cast slabs:

We can readily process the following materials:

  • Carbon steels
  • Aluminium and copper alloys
  • Nickel alloys
  • Cobalt alloys
  • Titanium
  • Zirconium
  • Specialist stainless steels

Types of grinding

Pre-grinding is primarily used to detect and eliminate production related surface defects or to remove any scaling that may be present. Complete surface grinding can be performed on all sides of the product. Larger defects are detected at this stage and can be eliminated by "local grinding". With this procedure we prepare a defect-free product for further processing (e.g. cold or hot rolling).

Material which, due to production defects, requires defect correction or elimination before further processing. Individual defects can be firstly repaired via local grinding and then ground completely "clean" via full surface grinding.

Smaller defects that can not be detected during the preliminary grinding stages are removed by fine grinding. Typically during this process, the surface roughness can be determined by our clients between 160 and 30μm.

Local defects on the material surface can be repaired by spot repairs. In order to detect such defects, the final inspection is carried out visually by our experienced manual flex operators. Ultrasonic and dyp pen testing inspection is also possible according to customer specific requests. This is undertaken in close collaboration with an external specialist company.

Machines

In our grinding service centres located within the "ArcelorMittal" steelworks as well as at Langenfeld, we use our own state of the art machines for the grinding of ingots or continuous cast slabs and billets.

On our own in-house RSM machines we have the possibility to grind your ingots or continuous cast slabs in the cold as well as the hot condition and regularly process exotic alloy materials such as titanium and zirconium. Grinding is possible up to a width of 1500 mm, with a maximum weight of 25 tonnes. We can adapt our resources to match almost any required daily capacity.

For normal grinding of billets and blooms we have special long product machines, which allow grinding up to a maximum weight of 13 tonnes.

For billet grinding Evertz offers pre-grinding as well as fine grinding. The special unique feature of our grinding process is that the billets are completely finished on the machine including deburring. The product turning is done automatically and processing square billets up to 220 mm is possible.

The disc cutting machines used in Duisburg can accommodate disc wheels up to 800 mm in diameter. In Langenfeld we use discs in diameter up to 1 260 mm and 1 560 mm. The maximum diameter for round products is 900 mm in Langenfeld. In Duisburg in our HZ3 service centre the maximum thickness for slabs is 250 mm. In two separate locations within the "ArcelorMittal" steelworks we have several cutting machines. In Gebläsehalle we have several single cutting machines and in our hall called HZ3, a combination of grinding and cutting machines.

Our overhead cranes can lift different weights depending on the location. In Gebläsehalle up to 20 t, in HZ3 where we have two overhead cranes 25 t and 40 t and in Langenfeld up to 40 t.
